Former Premier League player Paul Merson has predicted a big twist on the final day in England in the race for Champions League football. The ex-Arsenal and Aston Villa midfielder talked about the possibility of a big upset against Liverpool in his column for the Daily Star. According to him, the race for Champions League football is far from over in the Premier League ahead of the final day of the season on Sunday.
Merson said that Chelsea and Leicester City deserve a Champions League spot more than Liverpool as he predicted that Crystal Palace could play the role of spoilers when they visit Anfield to take on the Reds in the final game of the current Premier League season.
Liverpool have made a late push for Champions league football next season with their current run of four straight wins. The Reds made it four wins in a row with the 3-0 victory over home team Burnley on Wednesdaythrough the goals from Roberto Firmino, England defender Nathaniel Philips and England national team player Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain who came off the bench in the second half to wrap up the dominant victory.
The win over Burnley took Liverpool into fourth position with a better goal difference than Leicester City who dropped into fifth position as a result of the Reds’ victory at Burnley. Liverpool and Leicester City both have the same points, while Chelsea in third place have one point more than the two teams.
Liverpool, Chelsea and Leicester City all have the chance to seal a Champions League spot on the final day of the season this weekend with just two slots available. Paul Merson doesn’t think the three teams will record the wins needed to bag a place in Europe’s premier club competition in the new season. If all the three teams win their respective games, Leicester City will be the team to miss out on Champions League football.
